I don't remember exactly when these were initially released but off the top of my head this is probably close to a 10 year old design. It still has the same weak motor that bogs down when you plunge cut aggressively, very small degree of oscillation angle, and the motor is still not a floating design, but bolted directly to the body, which means crazy vibrations. This tool is so ancient when you compare to all the innovations and breakthroughs we had with oscillating tools, I wouldn't be surprised if Dewalt releases a new one tomorrow.
So which multitool do I use these days? Milwaukee M18 Fuel. https://www.homedepot.c
This is the new generation of multitool that has been released just a few years ago. It's $230 with 5ah battery right now. Only slightly more than double the price of dewalt, but you get 5 times the multitool (number I just pulled out of my ass) and 3 times the battery. This thing is a dream to use and first time I tried it, I was completely blown away. It was like going from Toyota Corolla to a Cadillac. Power is absolutely insane, doesn't bog down when you push hard. That in combination with 4.2 degrees of oscillation angle makes this thing do plunge cuts through a 2x4 in just a few seconds, many times faster than dewalt. The motor is also free floating so it doesn't rattle your fillings out. I didn't think this was a big deal until I had to use dewalt again a few times and it was clearly apparent how much more it vibrates your hands and tires them out. Using this thing for past few years has been a dream. Me and my coworkers were honestly blown away when we first acquired this tool a few years ago and compared it to head to head with dewalt XR.
I don't hold loyalty to any brand, I have Dewalt, Milwaukee, and a few Makita tools in my collection. Like I told my buddy, no brand makes all the great tools. You never see for example, framers working with Milwaukee skill saw, it's always Makita. Makita is the king of skill saws and I haven't tried all the multitools, but out of the 4 or so I had experiences with, in my opinion Milwaukee is the king of multitools and well worth the extra $130 over Dewalt. This is just my honest opinion about a tool after putting in a lot of professional hours with both.
