Personally I view it as a luxury product. It is convenient especially if your laundry room doesn't have a sink to wash detergent residue off your hands, or you're just tired of cleaning up those blue detergent stains all over your washer. Or if you have kids doing laundry who are not gonna actually measure their detergent.
Downsides of pods: (1) the dose can't be adjusted for very small loads, (2) you can't use it to pretreat. Most stain remover sprays don't actually work better than using good liquid detergent to pretreat. (3) the pod lining is polyvinyl alcohol based, which is a microplastic with environmental effects. However, note that simply washing any sort of nylon or polyester clothing releases far more microplastics into the water, and the amount of PVA in a pod is pretty comparable to how much is in a week's worth of contact lens solution.
IMO pods get far more hate than they deserve. Reviews like Consumer reports even cheat by deducting 5 points from pods because they can't pretreat (liquids get up to 5 points for pretreating performance), which make the pods appear like they don't clean well.
