I guess $20 is fine, but be aware it's pretty easy to find these generic docks in the $20-$30 range regularly.

As a random example, this dock on Amazon [amazon.com] can be had for $26.99 - 30% coupon = $17.99. It's been this price with this coupon for at least 3-4 weeks, if not longer.

I've been keeping my eye out and just haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. As far as I can tell, all you'e really picking are available ports, dock design, and Steam Deck charging cable design. I haven't noticed too many comments discussing 'quality' on these. They all seem to be the same as one would probably expect.

Again, good deal...but in this case the 'pointless price' that Woot! uses is in fact a pointless price this time around, as these will never cost you $49.99 if you take 3 minutes to research.
The front lip is definitely involved in keeping the Steam Deck propped up even on the official one from Valve. There's no way it stays upright without it.

That being said, I disagree that any of these docks pose a long term risk to the integrity of the Steam Deck. The ones I've seen all come with some sort of silicone padding at the base and on the inside of the front lip. It's not like your screen is being pushed into straight up metal.
FYI, in case you were mistaken, the OP @ woot is not for Valve's steam deck dock, the manufacturer of this one is "zyerch". Amazon equivalent item is https://www.amazon.com/Docking-St...0BRKTG9WZ/

This was probably obvious to some but this doesn't appear to come with a wall power adapter. Should be fine if you're using the one that came with the Steam Deck anyway and still seems like a decent deal, just worth noting.

Just my opinion (and I have no evidence to support it): I do not think these Steam Deck docks that seem to hold up the Deck using pressure against the screen PULLING away from the SD are a good idea. I believe the Steam Deck should rest against the back using gravity, be supported behind the device. I have a JSAUX stand [amazon.com] (same formfactor, not a "dock") that appeared to be putting pressure directly against the screen of my Steam Deck. I didn't like it and stopped using after a few weeks. Ended up 3D printing a stand which wasn't as vertical the Deck could lean on. This style is probably fine for occasional however I do not think the screen is a great place for the entirety of the Deck's weight should be pressed against, long term at least. /rant
Isn't that the same way the official steam deck is used?

How usable are these with laptops?

I've been looking at docks and it seems like a normal laptop dock and separate stand would be more versatile.

I think the angle is different on the Valve version, screen doesn't appear to be pinched by the front lip but the device actually leans on the back of dock for support. The lip even appears to angle AWAY from the screen as opposed to pressing into it.

Honestly I think there are going to be a bunch of class action suits because of these 3rd party docks due to damage over time, screen breaking / bowing, touch screen dead spots, etc. If the Deck was a light as the Switch I do not think it would matter overall...but it is a fatty!

looks just like the JSAUX I use down to the rubber anti-slip. I think it is, those pics look familiar. I think I paid 30-40 and it's great.

edit: same pics

Right but you also are getting the dock directly from valve and they're going to push firmware and make sure that it works as best it can with their own device. That might be worth the extra $3

I'll be very careful with what woot sells, they are usually not living up to my expectation.

Aside from the form factor, is there any reason this won't work a as a USB-c hub on regular laptop?<=$20 seems like a decent deal for one with ethernet and 4K@60hz.
