About this game:
  • Develop the landscape of a medieval fortress city one tile at a time. Whether blocking a city's growth or connecting with your opponent's road to share the points, Carcassonne provides plenty of ways to use your cunning and outsmart your opponents.
  • Players fill in the countryside around the medieval fortified city, choosing from tiles that depict cities, roads, monasteries, and fields; each new tile creates an ever-expanding board on which players can then add their followers.
  • Followers can take many different roles (knights, monks, farmers, or thieves) determined by the type of tile on which they're placed. Each role scores points differently, so you'll need careful planning to make the best use of your followers.
  • Players score points by having followers on tiles as features are completed. The player who makes the most strategic placements of tiles and followers will score the most points and win the game.

It's a strategy game that's pretty accessible (limited rules explanation and an average person can pick it up fairly quickly). It's certainly more similar to dominos than settlers but is popular in the early phase of people learning there's more to strategy games than monopoly, life and risk. We've owned it for years and pull it out once or twice a year. You could burn $20 on far less.

It's an essential game for families. I play with buddies for beers and board games night and we roll out the expansions, and then I can also play with my 8 and 10 year old and they can beat me. It is super fun, easy to learn, and highly competitive.

Catan does not get old. You are not playing it right then.

No. You lay tiles and build roads/cities to score points I believe

Great for intro board gamers, but like Catan gets old fast.

My friends and I call this the "pepperoni city" game. It's a fun game.waiting on the big box version to drop back down

As for catan, it was fun, until you start using statistics to min max the common dice rolls/for the card draws. It drains the game.

Check out a game called Moonrakers! Super fun!! I'd rate it slightly higher than terraforming Mars

Worth mentioning that the game is on Board Game Arena, so you can try it there before you buy it.
