You just need one digital copy. As long as it's a single player game, you install it on one device and keep airplane mode on. Install on the second and keep internet on. First one can play offline (occasionally it might check by asking you to turn airplane mode off) while the second switch will connect online to verify no one else on the account is playing and then will start.

So for any single player game like Mario odyssey, super smash, Yoshi, etc both my kids play at the same time even though we only have one digital copy. Cuts down on the fighting.

Animal crossing and Pokémon are the only games we buy physical copies of so they can play with each other and trade locally. Even games like links awakening is great digitally. I can play on my switch and my daughter plays on hers. We sit next to each other and play together so she knows where to go and what to do.

Unlikely it will drop below $39.99. 1st party games from Nintendo tend to stay at this price range. Wouldn't be surprised to see this as a Buy 2 Get 1 deal from Target, Amazon, etc.
