Discworld books are generally not a sequential series (there's the odd reference here and there, but IMO not really significant to the individual books), and this book is wonderful. I've read it many times over the years.

Never read this series before, but I'm interested in checking it out. Will I be lost starting with book 13?

They are set in the same universe but each is mostly a self contain book. Some are connected. Some features cameo or mention. You can google something like "discworld reading order" for connections as well as grouping with shared elements.

Here is one result where it considers Small Gods to be a "gateway book"

There are other sites with other details as well.

My first girlfriend read a third of this to me over the phone years ago. Guess I'll finish the rest now I see I have a Kobo store credit.

This is one of my favorite Discworld books, and it is a great place to start. This book is one of the ones that doesn't have a lot of references to other characters in the series and is pretty well self contained. He wraps deep philosophical thought in satire, and it is brilliant. He is honestly my favorite author, and the Disc is one of my favorite fantasy settings ever.

A lot of other books in the series could be grouped together based on characters, like the City Watch (Vimes), the Witches, Death, Moist von Lipwig, and a several others, but honestly you can jump in anywhere.

JUST finished this. How crazy to see it here. I am really enjoying the series thus far.
Also, I hear there is good eating in tortoises.

You will be fine reading this first. It's one of the better books with a richer plot than some of the others. You will miss some of the deeper immersion into the workings of the Discworld universe, but not in a way that you will feel like you got shortchanged. The stories that carry over books are not super dependent on each other, most are character backgrounds that continue across the series, so while this book has a few recurring characters, it's not critical to their development. Few in the series are complete characters.

This is my second lap through the Discworld novels, the first time since Pratchett's death. And, as remembered, this is his crowning achievement. If he had never written anything else, he would have been celebrated forever.

There are good novels after this one -- his average work is better from here on out than in his earlier works -- but nothing tops this.

If you only read one Discworld novel (and I wouldn't recommend stopping at one), it should be Small Gods.

Yeah this my favourite too. His books always contained sarcastic references to the world, but none range more true and at the same time funny than this one.
