The shell is a resin made from linseed oil that biodegrades. Also, since the fertilizer is released from the shell via osmosis, it only releases as fast as the plant can take it in. Which reduces potential fertilizer runoff into waterways.

Simply put, no. I did an experiement using 8 pots, 4 different varities of plants. The Miracle Gro far exceeded the Osmocote in growth and bloom. We're not talking a little bit either. The Miracle Gro plants performed like they were on steriods while the Osmocote plants did very little. The only benefit from Osmocote is that you don't have to use it often. Then again, it barely worked.
