This sharpener did quite well in the Project Farm testing 5 years ago.

I've come to the conclusion that knives are like watches...

You can spend thousands (or more) on a Rolex/Omega/IWC/etc.... and hundreds (or more) to maintain it... and, functionally, what do you have? Something that tells time. I see the value in fine timepieces... they're jewelry... they have have a mechanical perfection to them. However, in the end, they tell time... and in most cases, they don't tell time as well as a quartz Timex or smartwatch.

Knives are the same way. You can buy an expensive knife set. You can worry about maintaining them and pay for expensive sharpeners. You can avoid the dishwasher... but functionally, what do you have? A sharp knife. Or... can can buy Mercer or Victorinox... and a cheap, pull-thru sharpener... and put them in the dishwasher... and, functionally, what do you have... a sharp knife.

Not saying one choice is the right one... but remember the goal. My experience with friends and relatives... the ones with the 'nicest' knives use them the least. The people who can actually cook, realize that they're tools and functionality matters.

I feel like this must be the original pull through sharpener, I remember getting this exact same model over 30 years ago. Still works good. Though there are many others that work the same now.

This is NOT in the same category as OP, but for anyone who wants to invest in the real deal knife sharpening (or it's extremely important to you and you hate using a whetstone), highly recommend Work Shop. absolutely immaculate edges with very little effort, of course downside is there's a bit of an investment.

I have this sharpener. It's great to have when your knife needs a quick sharpening. I saw it as a best buy on America's Test Kitchen many moons ago and it's been in my knife drawer ever since.

Been using one of these for quick touch ups on the kitchen knives for the last few years. Works well for what it is. The scissor sharpener has been a bit of a disappointment in comparison.

I used to be the head chef for a catering company and we had stacks of these back in the 80s. Seems like they've been around forever! They work well, just be sure to use them right.

If you have a good set of knives avoid this like the plague. You will ruin your knives quicker using one of these rather than using a manual whetstone or a free standing sharpening system.
The problem is with the way these sharpen the blade. They work in the end, but they take off too much material and lead to the knives lives being shortened.
For cheaper knives buy this (or any other pull through) and let it rip. I wouldn't really worry about screwing up common retail knives with this because they are pretty replaceable.

Pulling this tool across a knife seems kinda dangerous for your hands no? Usually you pull the knife through the sharpener.

Your hand is behind the rounded protector to avoid you banging it into the knife.

This.
It will make your knife really sharp but removes a lot more material than other methods.
I use these in a commercial setting and run thru knives weekly after they get stripped down far enough.

gotta throw in my $.02 since I haven't seen anyone mention it yet: 95% of the time you're better off just using one of those cylindrical rods to hone your knives. The truth is that unless you're doing some real heavy duty work, your knife edge just needs to be re-aligned rather than completely reground.
I own both stones and a diamond plate, but can only think of a couple times when I seriously needed either over the past several years, and almost always due to abuse or mishandling on my part.
that said - this is a good price for the convenience if you do actually need a sharpener, and most people will be fine with one of these as long as they're not using it in the place of a honer.
