I started buying my fav movies on physical media again because all these streaming services are jerking us around.
That's why you rip them and store them in your Jellyfin, Emby or Plex library. If there's a defect it'll show up in the ripping process and you can ask for a replacement.
Which 4K player are you using? I know that some models are more prone to freezes than others.

I'm wondering how much of this issue is "player defects" vs. "disc defects."

I have too. But some of these Blu Ray and 4K disks have defects making them useless. You have to watch an entire disk to experience the issues. That can add up to be a lot of time which many do not have. I've had new blu ray and 4k sitting around for years. Tried a few and found some of the discs do not work or fail to go any further at a certain point. The studios are using garbage companies to manufacture these dirt cheap. They don't care. You can go on forums to see all the issues which they are aware of. Quality discs seem to be disappearing. I'm finding myself wanting to look for older publishing dated discs.

I examine every new disc under a bright light for scratches, and if I see any significant ones I exchange it. I thankfully haven't had any issues with playback on discs that weren't scratched, I'm using a Panasonic UB820 player.

Picked up "The Thing" and "Ambulance". Heard "The Thing" in 4k is amazing. I love how ridiculous "Ambulance" is and just know it'll look good in that format.

I'm selling all my physical media cause I can't take them with me where I'm moving. It sounds like we're a match made in heaven.

I have most of what I want on physical media. In some cases 3 resolutions... plus those HD-DVD's that are still hanging around. Big Grin

No, I got a bunch of great movies from that. Blade Runner 2049, Waterworld,Lucy then another great Amazon 3/33 deal a few months ago too with Wild Robot and two others I can't remember it was a part of.
They also had regular bluray sale 3/15 that I picked up Princess Bride, Batteries Not Included and Flash Gordon, but that was I think last November or maybe October.
ebay might be cheaper, but with 4k be sure to check, Gruv tried 3 times with Apollo 13 for me as it had weird circular scrapes on the surface and would not play on my xbox player. It's nice though that they don't make me send them back so now I have 3 copies of it on bluray too with the combo. ha!
